After writing about the care of widows and elders in the church, Paul concludes this last chapter of this letter by talking mostly about the kind of treasure Christians should pursue in this world. He tells him: “Some people, eager for money, have wandered from the faith and pierced themselves with many griefs. But you, man of God, flee from all this, and pursue righteousness, godliness, faith, love, endurance and gentleness.” (10-11) However, it is very interesting that Paul begins this section by once more exhorting the church in the area of showing respect towards each other. While in the last chapter, he told the church members … Read the rest

Most Christians who read this chapter cannot fully comprehend it nor see how it could be relevant to their Christian lives in any significant way. So it is likely that many who read it simply pass over it without much thought, thinking widows and elders are not my concern. But that’s precisely why this chapter is of great importance and very relevant to our Christian lives. Widows and elders should be our concern. In fact, if Paul devoted a whole chapter writing about them to Timothy, then we should take a very close look at them to see why and make them our … Read the rest

“If I am delayed, you will know how people ought to conduct themselves in God’s household, which is the church of the living God, the pillar and foundation of the truth.”

To restate what we had said before, the church in Ephesus had some serious problems. There were some false teachers in the church, teaching false doctrine, and corrupting some of the members with teachings that were “contrary to the sound doctrine” (1:10). So, Paul wrote this letter to give Timothy some advice on how to deal with this problem. He started out this letter by telling him to command these false teachers to stop circulating their false teachings. He helped Timothy stand on the grace of God and urged … Read the rest

1 Timothy 2:1-15

Paul wrote this letter to Timothy for obvious reasons. He mentions one of them in the first chapter when he tells him why he had asked him to remain in the Ephesus church in order to stop some false teaching that was taking root among the believers. This is very alarming since Paul himself was the one who preached the gospel to the Ephesians and had established that church in the first place. So, it makes us wonder how easy it is for a false teaching to find its way into a … Read the rest

There’s a good reason to study the Book of First Timothy. Paul wrote this letter to Timothy to teach him how a pastor ought to serve the church. He also gave him instructions on the kind of elders he ought elect as overseers to govern the church. In this letter Paul also gave instructions on how the believing members ought to conduct themselves in the church. He tells Timothy in 3:15: “If I am delayed, you will know how people ought to conduct themselves in God’s household, which is the church of the living God, the pillar and foundation of the truth.” Here we also have a description of what the … Read the rest
