And we cannot possibly exhaust all its teachings on prayer. But we can look at some fundamental passages relating to prayer and ask God our Father to give us the wisdom we need to conceive these teachings in our hearts and minds. Every believer in our Lord Jesus knows in their hearts the significance of prayer. He or she knows that prayer is an intimate and necessary part of their lives— that unless they pray, their relationship with God suffers greatly. And no believer wants that to happen.
We are going through a series of lectures regarding prayer. We acknowledge that prayer is a vital, if not the most vital part of our Christian lives. And that’s part of the reason we have devoted ourselves to learning about prayer. Here’s one good reason. We can find in the Bible a number of basic principles of truth, and one of them is the principle of prayer. We are amazed that the Bible even talks about prayer. Isn’t it true that God knows beforehand what we need? And if so, then why should we pray at all? Yet the Bible exhorts us to pray. Why?
We have looked at this verse once before at the beginning of our study on prayer. We realized that, like the disciples, we too have a request of our Lord Jesus. In a sense, it was our very first prayer request. As verse 1 reads: “One day Jesus was praying in a certain place. When he finished, one of his disciples said to him, “Lord, teach us to pray, just as John taught his disciples.” Why did they even make a request like this? Because in a sense, we are like children, and children naturally learn and grow through observation and imitation. Very few actually see the truth as it is, that in a true prayer, there are always three aspects of prayer.
After the Lord Jesus called his first disciples, he gave them their first public teaching in the Sermon on the Mount. He talked to them about the kingdom of God, about its laws and its life. In that kingdom, God is not only King, but he is a Father. He not only gives us all things, but he is all things to us as well. When we come to know who our God and Father is, we can be blessed beyond measure. So, one of those days, they asked him: “Lord, teach us to pray…” (Luke 11:1) What they meant was this: “Lord, no one has ever prayed so intimately and effectively and powerfully like you.
