Key Verse 28:6

“He is not here; he has risen, just as he said. Come and see the place where he lay”

Today’s we’re going to be looking at the Easter story as told by Matthew, the man who used to sit at his tax collector’s booth in a corner of the market place and collect taxes for the Romans from his own people. Not everyone paid up, so Matthew probably employed some thugs to shake up those who didn’t want to pay as well as those who couldn’t. I cannot imagine how cruel and heartless someone like this could be. Today, in a world controlled by money, people like him are everywhere, and their cruelty knows no bounds, not caring whose life they ruin as long as they are making money. … Read the rest

WHEN THE SON OF MAN COMES

Matthew 25:31-46

Key Verse 25:31

“When the Son of Man comes in his glory, and all the angels with him, he will sit on his throne in heavenly glory.”

“When the Son of Man comes!” And that was the whole point of Jesus’ tri-parable in this chapter, when he returns! It was the last thing he teaches before he allows them to take him to his suffering and crucifixion. He teaches about how important it is to be prepared for “When the Son of Man comes”— for when the Christ, the Lord of glory will return. He also teachers something else, about how to be prepared for his return. In the first two parables, he teaches that faith in Christ and responsibility are most important in preparing for his return. … Read the rest

Like the parable of the ten virgins before it, in this parable too, Jesus once again talks about his second coming. Someone asked me the other day: “Who’s Jesus talking about in this parable? In other words who are they who are given the talents and later called to account for them?” Actually, it’s a very good question! Indeed who are they? Well let’s see. We can say that in Jesus’ time, there may have been no more than three kinds of people in the world. There were the Jews; and then there were the followers of Jesus, who were the Christians of the day; … Read the rest

Jesus’ last sermon about the end of the age was to say the least, difficult to hear! They would be times of sufferings unequalled to from the beginning of time. They would be times of deception where the evil one would deceive many. The love of most would grow cold. Faith would be scarce. And when the Son of God finally returns to judge the world as God had promised that he would, the whole world would see him and mourn. But their mourning would be in vain, because the time of mourning, repentance and the forgiveness of sin would be over. It would be time of reckoning for every man and … Read the rest

Signs Of The End Of The Age (II)

This chapter regarding the end times is pretty long and detailed that it seems almost impossible to cover it in one lecture. So, we are doing it in two parts. The passage we already looked at was verses 1-14, where Christ predicts the destruction of the temple and he warns us against deception with these eerie words: “Watch out that no one deceives you For may will come in my name, claiming, ‘I am the Christ,’ and will deceive many.” And “Many false prophets will appear and deceive many people.” God only knows how many are being deceived by false gospels, false teachers and … Read the rest

I can tell you that no one likes to be deceived or scammed. But here’s the thing! Jesus tells us that it will happen in the end times more frequently and more intently than ever before! And people will fall away from God until they are completely in the thrall of the master deceiver, who is the devil himself. Here are two words you don’t often hear! Devil and thrall! What does thrall mean? It means a person who is morally or mentally enslaved by a power or an influence or by someone else. It means to be in … Read the rest

This is a very harsh chapter for anyone to hear, especially for those who are in God’s employ and doing service to him. They are the last words Jesus ever spoke within the temple grounds. As Matthew tells us, Jesus spoke first to his disciples as well as to the crowds. And finally he turned his attention to the religious leaders (the Scribes and Pharisees) who had strayed from their God given calling and mission and had so abused their office that they were no longer worthy of respect. In fact, Jesus harshly rebuked them for, in their wickedness of heart and hypocrisy, they … Read the rest

It was the last thing he said to conclude his parable on the wedding feast. These words us a lot about God’s invitation to the wedding feast of his Son, which in essence is an invite to salvation. The first thing it tells us is that the gospel of salvation is like a wedding feast. What this means is that our salvation is like a celebration of marriage union with the Savior of our souls, Christ Jesus. Key Verse: 21:37

Jesus said to those who thought they were in good standing with God: “I tell you the truth, the tax collectors and the prostitutes are entering the Kingdom of God ahead of you.” (21:31) That’s remarkable that the despicable tax collectors and prostitutes would even have a chance at salvation, considering the terrible lives they had led. But Jesus explained to those who thought they were saved on account of their own self righteousness why they were far behind the tax collectors and prostitutes when it came to salvation. He goes on to tell them: “For John came to you to show you the way of righteousness, and you did not believe … Read the rest

Matthew 21:23-32
Key Verse: 21:29

“’I will not’ he answered, but later he changed his mind and went..”

The common folk, who witnessed Jesus’ rampage at the Temple, were really glad that someone finally expressed disgust at the way the Temple priests carried out God’s business with corruption and greed. But of course, the Temple priests themselves were terribly upset. And they were desperate to get rid of Jesus; at least they wanted to discredit him in front of all the people. Not that they didn’t try on many occasions, and failed!
After Jesus wreaked havoc at the temple in order to cleanse it from all the corruption that had consumed it, he left with his disciples in order to spend the night in a nearby town called Bethany. In the morning Jesus and his disciples again started again for the city of Jerusalem. It was a dangerous place for him to return to considering that the religious leaders were waiting for him so as to oppose him again and possibly to arrest him.
These were Jesus’ last days on earth as he entered his capital city in a very unusual way. Unlike all other kings in history, Jesus rode in to victory on a donkey! And instead of demonstrating God’s anger and retribution against a rebellious and renegade people, he rather humbled himself and sacrificed his life on a cross for the sins of all who put their faith in him. Jesus demonstrated God’s amazing grace to anyone who wants to be free from sin and return to God. But there’s something here that we ought to know. HOSANNA TO THE SON OF DAVID

Matthew 21:1-11
Key Verse 21:5

“Say to the Daughter of Zion, ‘See, your king comes to you, gentle and riding on a donkey, on a colt, the foal of a donkey.’”

In the world we live in every day, being the first or the last in anything is a big thing. In sports for example, to come out first or last makes a big difference. Champions march off to honor and glory, while losers fade away in defeat. But Jesus explains to us that in God’s world, it’s not like that at all! Champions are usually the last while losers are the first. I know, it’s an upside-down thing. But Jesus tells us a truth worth keeping close to your heart; he says: “Whoever wants to be first must be your slave” … Read the rest

Key Verse 20:32-33

It seemed that no matter how often and what Jesus said about his inevitable suffering and death, the disciples weren’t listening. In the last passage we looked at, as soon as Jesus mentioned his upcoming suffering than John and James tried to negotiate with him for top positions in his kingdom. They hadn’t been listening to his words about the Messiah who had to suffer and die and then be raised from the dead. They didn’t understand that the glory of the Savior would come at the high cost of his suffering and death, and not by taking power by force … Read the rest

Key Verse 19:26

Look at verse 16. “Now a man came up to Jesus and asked, ‘Teacher, what good thing must I do to get eternal life?’” This rich young man came up to Jesus to ask him what good thing he should do to get eternal life. In other words, he wanted to know what good thing he should do to save his soul. Most people had come to Jesus asking for a healing for themselves or a favor on behalf of another person. But no one had ever asked this particular question. So, this young man’s question basically gives meaning to why Jesus had come into the world in the … Read the rest

Key Verse 19:8

“Jesus replied, ‘Moses permitted you to divorce your wives because your hearts were hard. But it was not this way from the beginning.’”

To God’s eyes, a person is great not when the world considers him or her great, but when a person decides to walk in the footsteps of Jesus— in humility and in sacrifice and in servantship. That’s what makes a person great in God’s eyes! If you learn from Jesus how to be humble, when every bone in your body wants you to be prideful and defiant; when you listen to Jesus who wants you to sacrifice something of yourself when every bone in your body wants you to be selfish and self centered; when you understand from Jesus how important it is to serve others, … Read the rest

Matthew 18:1-35
Key Verse 18:3

“And he said: ‘I tell you the truth, unless you change and become like little children, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven.”

It seems that out of nowhere, Jesus’ disciples wanted to know “Who is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven?” Why ask such an odd question! Was it because Jesus had told Peter that he was giving him the keys of the kingdom of heaven? (16:19) Or because he rebuked the disciples for their lack of faith at their inability to cast the demon out of the boy in the previous chapter? No one knows what might have triggered this question. But surely they had been thinking about it. Maybe the real question on their minds was this: “’Where does each of us … Read the rest

Last week, we learned from the previous passage how Jesus asked his disciples a simple, but critical question: “Who do you say I am?” It was then that they made this historic confession of faith, answering, “You are the Christ, the Son of the Living God.” Matthew notes that it was from this moment on that Jesus began to teach his disciples that as messiah, he had to “…go to Jerusalem and suffer many things at the hands of the elders, chief priests and teachers of the law, and that he must be killed and on the third day be raised to life.” (16:21) Jesus … Read the rest

As the time for Jesus’ suffering was coming closer, his top disciple Peter made a historic confession of faith which solidified everything Jesus came to this world to do. Peter had said: “You are the Christ, the Son of the living God.” And this one confession became the foundation of our Christian faith and the rock of the Christian church. And for this very reason Jesus also promised Peter, “On this rock I will build my church”. Jesus meant that Peter’s confession was the rock of man’s salvation. How we see Jesus, and what we believe about him and what he’d come to do is really very important in our lives.
After the amazing miracle of the five loaves and two fish that Jesus had just performed, Matthew tells us another story about who Jesus is, and what faith in him is all about! Look at verse 22. Now the day was over, and the crowd of perhaps 10,000 had eaten their fill. So Jesus made his disciples get into the boat and go on ahead of him to the other side of the lake. Then, all alone he dismissed the crowd. It must have not been easy for him to dismiss this huge crowd all by himself. But he did so out of his compassion for his own disciples.
