It seems that the author of this gospel, Mark, for some reason originally decided to end his gospel in chapter 16 with verse 8. The comment you see inserted before the rest of the passage says: “The earliest manuscripts and some other ancient witnesses do not have Mark 16:9-20.” This comment does not mean that Mark was not the original author of this last passage in the gospel. Nor does it reduce the credibility of the passage in any way. Instead, this section compliments the gospel perfectly. It affirms the resurrection. It also includes the Great Commission Jesus gave to his disciples.
Mostly everyone has tasted some suffering or another in their lives. So, in a sense we understand what suffering is. But for the most part it’s hard to understand someone else’s suffering or identify with it because each person’s personal suffering is different from another’s. Throughout the ages sincere people have stood transfixed before the cross of Jesus’ suffering and strained to understand what He went through that day. But most of them came out short of understanding his suffering and thereby identifying with him. Some have even gone as far as to lock … Read the rest

He was the Christ, the Son of God, the King of Israel, and the promised Messiah. This was the answer that would cost him his life. But Jesus was ready to give his life.
The last supper Jesus had with his disciples is perhaps one of the most meaningful events in Christianity— the beginning of a new course in our lives. This is when each person is given an opportunity and a privilege to make a blood covenant with Jesus. And when I do, then I enter into an everlasting love relationship with him— a relationship that is mutual in the sense that he forgives my sins, and I commit my life to him in faith and obedience. In this new covenant in his blood, Jesus offered us what we need more … Read the rest

Jesus’ Blood Poured Out For Many

Mark 14:12-26

Key Verse: 14:24

“‘This is my blood of the covenant, which is poured out for many,’ he said to them.”

This is what Christians call the “Last Supper”. Through it he made a “new covenant” with his disciples— with all those who believe in him. The word “Covenant” means a “binding agreement” or “promise” sealed between two people. Most covenants would be sealed in ink or a handshake. But the covenant Jesus made with his disciples was one to be sealed in blood— his own blood. And this covenant was not with every one, but only with those who put their faith in him. And that meant his disciples back then, and after then all who have believed the gospel by their testimony. And here we … Read the rest

Previous to this, Jesus and his disciples were at the temple where Jesus called attention to a poor old widow who offered her last two coins to live on as an offering to God. After pondering her fate, she sacrificially gave all, with an absolute attitude toward God, thus setting the standard of selfless giving.
Last week we studied about the story of the poor widow whom Jesus admired and immortalized as a woman with a keen sense of history. In other words, she did something that shaped and molded history in a direction that glorified God. One seemingly insignificant widow molded history with an act of faith that gave a new meaning to, and set a new standard for the word “offering”. And thus, she made history and was counted among the spiritual giants in God’s history whose lives have shaped God’s history in the direction which best glorified God. May God also help us to be history makers for his kingdom.… Read the rest

The Bible scholar Jesus counseled was supposed to be a shepherd to the people of God— someone who was not only familiar with the Bible, but also able to point the way to eternal life and to the Kingdom of God. But through Jesus’ discourse with him and later in the temple courts it was apparent that even this genuine Bible scholar could not lead anyone to heaven. And here’s why! According to Jesus he was close enough to stand outside the gates of heaven but not inside. (12:34) And this apparently happens to many.
If you’d look at Mark 11:12-19, Jesus was on his way to the temple when he saw a fig tree and wanted to eat some of it’s fruit. But when he found no fruit on it, he cursed it. It was really odd that he would curse a tree for not bearing fruit. Why would Jesus do such a thing? It may be that he was thinking about the religious leaders from when he visited the temple. The tree was innocent. But the religious leaders were not! They had a responsibility before God to bear fruit. But they were too busy with their own affairs rather than to tend to God’s affairs. No wonder Jesus was broken … Read the rest

Jesus’ Blood Poured Out For Many

Mark 14:12-26

Key Verse: 14:24

“‘This is my blood of the covenant, which is poured out for many,’ he said to them.”

The high light of Jesus’ ministry was in his final act of sacrifice on the cross followed by his resurrection. We call this the “gospel”. He had lived a few years among us in order to reach this point where he would shed his blood on the cross for the washing away of our sins. He did that on the cross. It was the climax of his life on earth. He had come to shed his blood, to die and to rise again from the dead so that through faith in him we who are dead in our sins might be forgiven and live. … Read the rest

These events from the time he entered Jerusalem last— that is, the “Triumphal Entry”— marks the last week of Jesus’ life on earth. It’s the week before the most significant event in all of history, which is “Easter”, where Jesus will be given over to be crucified and die then rise again on the third day. What happens this week shows us a side of Jesus we are not used to seeing. He enters the city riding on a donkey, he curses a fig tree, then rampages … Read the rest

In the last passage Jesus asked the blind beggar “What do you want me to do for you? (51) It was a question that touches the inmost desires of men’s hearts. Jesus had once asked his own disciples before they began to officially follow him the same question, “What do you want?” (Jn 1:38) They had answered him saying, “Rabbi, where are you staying?” At the time, they were pure hearted and simply wanted to be with him and to learn from him. As time went on, their hearts began to covet the power and glory of worldly rulers.
