Malachi 3:13-4:6

“But for you who revere my name, the sun of righteousness will rise with healing in its wings. And you will go out and leap like calves released from the stall.”

It wasn’t that long ago that God accused these people of wearying him with their words. And when they asked “How have we wearied him”, Malachi had responded with the voice of the God: “By saying, ‘All who do evil are good in the eyes of the Lord, and he is pleased with them’ or ‘Where is the God of justice?’” (2:17) They complained about the Lord’s standard of justice. They said that God wasn’t fair in his dealings with his people. They said that God considers those who do … Read the rest

Test Me In This, Says The Lord Almighty

Malachi 2:17-3:12

Key Verse 3:10

“’Bring the whole tithe into the storehouse, that there may be food in my house. Test me in this,’ says the Lord Almighty, ‘and see if I will not throw open the floodgates of heaven and pour out so much blessing that you will not have room enough for it.’”

Look at 2:17. “You have wearied the Lord with your words”, the prophet tells the people. And they answer back saying: “How have we wearied him?” They didn’t know what a burden it was to the Lord to constantly have to hear their complaints. They always complained about how burdensome it was for them to serve God! They had no idea how tiresome it was to hear them talk about their problems. … Read the rest

“’I Hate Divorce’, Says The Lord.”

Malachi 2:10-17

Key Verse: 2:16

“’I hate divorce,’ says the Lord God of Israel, ‘and I hate a man’s covering himself with violence as well as with his garment,’ says the Lord Almighty. So guard yourself in your spirit, and do not break faith.”

Malachi dealt severely with the priests in the last passage we looked at. And now, he turns his attention to dealing directly with the nation as a whole. He confronts them with their own sin problem. His words are directed especially towards the men who had acted unfaithfully towards their marriage partners; and he rebukes them for doing the one thing that God hates so much— which is divorce. Divorce is a very delicate and difficult subject to talk about. So we should give it … Read the rest

A Covenant Of Life And Peace

Malachi 2:1-9

Key Verse 2:7

“For the lips of a priest ought to preserve knowledge, and from his mouth men should seek instruction— because he is the messenger of the Lord Almighty.”

Malachi began his word of prophesy to God’s people with a message of love. “I have loved you, says the Lord”. (1:2) “I have loved you, and do love you, and will always love you” as the Lord would say. What did God want from them? In 1:6 he tells them exactly what he wanted from them. “If I am a father, where is the honor due me? If I am a Master, where is respect due me”? God wanted them to honor him as their father. He wanted them to respect him as their master. … Read the rest

My Name Will Be Great Among The Nations

Malachi 1:1-14

Key Verse 1:11

“’My name will be great among the nations, from the rising to the setting of the sun. In every place incense and pure offerings will be brought to my name, because my name will be great among the nations,’ says the Lord Almighty.”

There is one thing we can be sure of— that God Almighty cares about his honor very much. He wants to be honored. He wants his name to be honored. The words the Lord Jesus taught us: “Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name.” are not a new truth in the Bible. “Honor the Lord” (Proverbs 3:9) had been ringing in the ears of God’s people since antiquity. And it carried through to the New Testament times … Read the rest

I Have Loved You

Malachi 1:1-5

Key Verse 1:2

“‘I have loved you,’ says the Lord. ‘But you ask, “How have you loved us?”‘ ‘Was not Esau Jacob’s brother?’, the Lord says. ‘Yet I have loved Jacob.’”

Read verse 1. “An oracle: The word of the Lord to Israel through Malachi.” There’s not much we know about the prophet Malachi. His name means messenger of the Lord, or angel of the Lord, whereby angels were considered messengers of God who carry God’s message to the Lord’s people. But Malachi was the last of the Old Testament prophets who lived probably in the 5th century BC. We don’t know if he had any contemporaries, but it is likely that he lived either in the times of Nehemiah the prophet or later.
