When John was wrapping up the gospel he wrote about the Lord Jesus he said: “Jesus did many other miraculous signs in the presence of his disciples, which are not recorded in this book. But these are written that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that by believing you may have life in his name.” (John 20:30-31) This was God’s intention from the start in sending his Son.
Before we get into the passage, I’d like to share a short, humorous story: It’s about a bagpiper who was hired to play at a gravesite service for a homeless man with no friends or family. Unfortunately, on his way to the burial site, the bagpiper got lost and it caused him to be an hour late. Finally, when he arrived, he saw that the funeral workers were all gone. There were no mourners, only the diggers and their equipment remained, and the men were off to the side eating lunch. Feeling really bad, and not knowing what else he could … Read the rest

Before we get into unraveling this passage, there is an urgent decision that we all have to make, which is to rest in Christ. Because as we have heard the command over and over to love each other, to love our brother, to love non-believers, we cannot but conclude that we, as believers come up short every time. The command to love God and love people is something that we make many mistakes with every day. But though this happens on and on, our assurance is based in Christ we have already perfectly loved them. This passage shows us that even when we fail to love … Read the rest

Good Morning. Today we will continue our study on 1 John 4. Continuing from verse 16b through 21. And really this is what I am doing continuing from where Nonso left off last week on love. You see, what John has been doing in this section of chapter 4 is telling us about love, and it’s connection to God and God’s connection to us through love. He seems to be focusing on a few points repeatedly, though coming at them from slightly different angle and establishing a few other points in the process. In fact if we look back at the previous chapters, we see aspects of this passage in them. Man is a curious creature. We wants to know everything. That’s why we explore and experiment and discover. And our desire to know is insatiable. As Christians we also so much want to know. We want to know if we are truly saved. Many have that problem, they are not sure whether they are really saved or not. But he wants the children of God to know that, just as there are children of God in this world, there are also children of the devil. How do we know them apart?
John never stopped warning the Christian congregations about false teachers who had been trying to lead them astray. He often shows them what the truth is and then exposes the lie which the agents of Satan were trying to teach.
The Christian life is a life of fellowship. It is a fellowship with God and fellowship with one another. The terms that John uses in his letter maybe strange to the non-Christians. But to the Christians, the terms he uses are not so strange. Rather they are somewhat interesting because they draw lines for us in life that otherwise we do not see in the world. For example, John uses terms such as light and darkness. He says that those who have fellowship with God, walk in the light, while those who do not have fellowship with God walk darkness. We talked a little bit about that when we went through chapter … Read the rest

In the first chapter John instructed the early church regarding the problem and dangers of the “Gnostics” of the time who denied the coming of our Lord Jesus in the flesh. Then John talked extensively about the importance of fellowship with God and with one another. John concluded with the issue of sin. The “Gnostics” freely sinned in their false theology. But John encouraged the early Christians to reconcile with God in fellowship by confessing their sins and receiving the forgiveness of God. In that way their fellowship with God and with each other would be secure as well as the … Read the rest

John tells us one of the several things why he has written this letter to the church. “We proclaim to you what we have seen and heard, so that you also may have fellowship with us. And our fellowship is with the Father and with his Son, Jesus Christ.” (3) His primary aim is that we believe what he has proclaimed, and by believing, we might have fellowship with God and with each other. It’s faith in what was proclaimed about Christ Jesus that secures for us eternal life and brings us into fellowship with God and consequently with one another as … Read the rest
